Question about beginning a job in graphic design?

Question by Moey: Question about beginning a job in graphic design?
I’m currently 17 and I’m still in highschool. I know a lot about CSS and HTML, I practically live on the computer and have been playing around with coding and designing as a hobby for years now. I grew up using freewebs and other free hosting sites, and I am also pretty much 100% photoshop literate.
I see job openings all the time where I’m from, saying that they are seeking inexperienced junior level developers to assist with client projects. They say that the requirements are just some HTML/CSS skills, and an overall idea of how to create and modify graphics and images in PhotoShop. I have always wanted to consider these types of jobs, but I’m always worried about that they will expect of me? I don’t know much about scripts, and I have only really created fun blogging type websites for me and my friend’s personal use, so what will I be asked to do in these kind of jobs? What will they expect of me?
Also when it comes to designing a portfolio, or showing examples, does anyone know of some websites proving tips and such? Thanks !

Best is give them a call and describe your situation. I am also 17 and work at a computer repair shop. It all depends on what they are looking for really. Maby they are looking for collage level students who are majoring in Comp sci or graphics design. you will never know until you call and ask. No hard done doing that, theres nothing to loose.

Designers don’t need to worry about PHP scripts, they typically make PSD mockups. Developers translate them to PHP scripts and such.

my wife was a CNA before she finished nursing school
she is now director of medical records for a large skilled care group. i was a resident of a nursing home for 4 months after my accident. i am a volunteer staff development coordinator for the nursing home i was in for my therapy.

CNA’s job is NEVER boring and is not easy at all.
you won’t feed residents, assist in therapy or daily activities and won’t bath/shower them but other then that you do much the same as the other shifts. every 2 hours every resident must be turned in bed, many of the sheets and pads will have to be changed each time. some residents will need assistance with toileting, many don’t sleep well and are up a lot, you will help transfer those who need assistance getting up over night, you will check vitals, and pass fresh ice and water. a few of the residents will still be up when you arrive so you will prepare them for bed, in the morning you will get a majority of the residents up and ready for breakfast(face and hands washed, dressed and beds made) before you leave. you also will have the least amount of help. you will be responsible for twice as many residents as the day and evening shifts due to the fact that most are sleeping and less active at night.

EDIT:
working in a nursing home is much like caring for a 2 year old (you perform essentially all the same duties) exept…………….

you have 6 to10 of them, all at the same time and they weigh 100 to 200 pounds each.

THERE IS NOT A MORE IMPORTANT OR REWARDING JOB TO BE DONE ANYWHERE

This question is for physical therapy assistants who work in home health.?

Question by Vicki H: This question is for physical therapy assistants who work in home health.?
How much does your company compensate you for a “per visit” rate? I have worked for the same company for the last three years, and I’m still getting the original 30.00 per visit they started me out at. I’m trying to find out if this is the norm.

Very quick and easy question about my taxes?

Question by Gohan Reborn: Very quick and easy question about my taxes?
I was going to do it thru Turbotax online back in february, decided not to, and go to someone else, and for personal reasons am now…late, but still am going to do it online.

Anyways, one of the questions is did I financially support a relative. I’m not sure if I should put yes or no.

I live with my father (in 2008 he turned 64, and I was 20), and from the moment I got my job (February 2008), I’ve been giving him 0 a month to assist in paying bills, beyond my share of the rent. (my share of the rent would be 5 a month). Is this considered financially assisting him, or would it be considered paying MY bills, because I live there, even though I give more than half?
Lol, no this is not his house. We are essentially roomates, however I pay more than half of the shared utilities and rent. Thanks guys.

It will depend on if on his tax return he indicated that he was a dependent on anothers tax return. And if you were giving him 520 amonth, did he claim that income? You also want to be sure he did not claim you.

I have 2 friends that work on them. Their answer is mainly money.

Not to say that they are mean. They care about the people they help to some extent. However, money is usually quite decent so that is their main drive. This is coming from my 2 friends, not my opinion.

Question for conservatives. Do you believe all welfare recipients are lazy, ne’er-do-well crack addicts?

Question by Alejandrina bison: Question for conservatives. Do you believe all welfare recipients are lazy, ne’er-do-well crack addicts?
I’m a Liberal Democrat, and I’ll be the first one to admit that there is some abuse of the welfare system. Some people would rather sit at home and live off the government .

But I also believe that the majority of welfare recipients are (like me) hard-working people who are earnestly seeking work, but just can’t find a job for whatever reason. What do you say to someone like me?

Conservatives say that self-reliance and personal liberty are important virtues, and that individuals who work hard are rewarded.

Well, I’m here to tell you that I have a college degree and I have had a tremendously hard time finding work since graduating college 8 years ago. I’ve even served my country in the Peace Corps (although you conservatives probably don’t care, since Peace Corps isn’t as important as the military…we’re just a bunch of liberal hippies living in mud huts right?)

I realize you conservatives hate the idea of expanding government, but wouldn’t it be a good idea for there to be some type of government agency whose purpose is to pair every job seeker with a specialized counselor whose job it is to monitor each job seeker and assist them with their job search.

I realize this flies in the face of the free market and the free individual (which conservatives espouse) but the truth is, some people just can’t find a job no matter how hard they try (be it because of a lack of personal/professional connections, poor interviewing skills, shyness, or having a liberal arts degree). Some people need help finding work. They just can’t do it on their own. And especially now, with our economy in the toilet and many people exhausting all of their unemployment benefits, some people HAVE to go on welfare. They have no choice. And by the way, why are so many conservatives against extending unemployment benefits in times like these? You think I enjoy being out of work?

Isn’t that how all jobs are obtained? Through connections? Well what if a person doesn’t have many friends? Then what?

Conservatives are right. Living off the government is wrong. For this reason, the government’s number one priority should be to ensure the full employment of every one of its citizens. People who want to work (and who are available to work) should have a job. When people are employed, everyone benefits. The government receives more tax revenue, businesses receive more business because people have more money to spend, and incumbent politicians have an easy time getting re-elected.

Question about social security number and fraud?

Question by Trinity C: Question about social security number and fraud?
My husband is an immigrant from England. He entered the US mid December 2009. On the visa application there was an option to file concurrently for a SSN. We decided to go that route. The immigration officials told him that a SSN could take as long as 3-6 months. He received his permanent resident card rather quickly after arriving here. (and I am aware that they come from different agencies)

I have asked him more than once if he has received his card as I have reason to suspect that he has. He used to check the mail religiously, but has shown no interest in it for the past 2 or 3 months. He said he hadn’t. But he said it so smugly. He has also flat out refused to come with me to the social security office to inquire about his SSN.

That being the back story, now I will ask my questions:

1. Is there any way that I can find out if his card has been issued? (I know all suspicion points to yes, but I want to know for sure and he isn’t forthcoming)

2. I live in government assisted housing. He will not qualify for the subsidy. My manager has graciously allowed him to stay here without adjusting the rent, pending the arrival of his SSN and subsequent addition to the lease. If I find that he has been keeping a received card a secret, does he stand to be prosecuted for any kind of fraud?

Please don’t be afraid to be brutally honest. Opinions are welcome, but if you have legal or personal experience- I would really love to hear from you.

Thank you in advance.

There is no way for you to find out if he has a Social Security number other than his telling you so.

A question for LDS in the forum: what is your *personal* view on…?

Question by Valєηtiηa ☆: A question for LDS in the forum: what is your *personal* view on…?
Homosexuals?

I understand that the LDS’ Church official stand follows the general christian based consensus: it’s a sin. Am I correct? “We want to help these people, to strengthen them, to assist them with their problems and to help them with their difficulties. But we cannot stand idle if they indulge in immoral activity, if they try to uphold and defend and live in a so-called same-sex marriage situation. To permit such would be to make light of the very serious and sacred foundation of God-sanctioned marriage and its very purpose, the rearing of families” (Hinckley)

But I want to know, how do you PERSONALLY feel about homosexuals? Are you friends with any, or close to any? Has knowing someone with gay tendencies ever made you wonder whether their tendency is really a moral sin, or rather something that cannot be helped or condemned?

I just would like to have someone’s perspective.

And: is there anything in the LDS canonical scriptures about homosexuality that would confirm/add to/modify what’s stated in the Bible? – Thanks.
Chase: I am not looking for an answer to fit any particular beliefs. But, on a personal note: I have nothing against gay people. I have gay friends I love very much. I have volunteered for Pride at Work, an organization that lobbies for gay rights in the work place. I don’t like to judge people, and certainly not based on something that they might not be able to “help” or “change”.
Thank you – very interesting. The main reason I asked is because I have mormon friends, and they don’t seem to have a problem with homosexuals and homosexuality. At all. So I was wondering if my friends were unique in that respect.
Oh, Red Baron: thanks for your insight! geez.
Oh, Red Baron: thanks for your insight! geez.
JuJu: I could not agree more. A gay couple I know has been together for over 25 years. I have seldom seen people more dedicated to one another. Not that it should surprise anyone based on their sexuality. Gay people are just like everyone else in that they have feelings, and are as capable of loving, loyalty, dedication.

I personally don’t care about another person’s sexual orientation..
This might be an area where I disagree with my church.. (I think this has something to do with my belief that people have the right to do whatever it is that makes them happy. So long as their happiness does not interfere with mine..)

I do not think that homosexuality is an illness, or something that can be “cured”…

Is it a sin?
Maybe.. Though I don’t really care to make that call.
I sin. You sin. (Speaking in generalities here..)
So why should we take it upon ourselves to condemn others.
Don’t we have enough to worry about?

Question going out to salon owners or similar business owners!?

Question by Becca: Question going out to salon owners or similar business owners!?
I would like to open up a “portable salon” offering salon services to people that cannot get out to get their hair done. My idea would be to go to assisted living homes, senior living communities, and individuals that have limited opportunity to get out, and provide basic to advanced services for them, without them having to leave their homes or living areas. I would like to provide haircuts, shampoo sets, perms, and eventually color to these people and allow them to feel good about themselves without all the hassle.
What would I need to do to make this dream become a reality? I am already a licensed cosmetologist. Any helpful sites about business licensing, business loans, business plans, ect. or any tips from personal experience would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much for any help you can provide.

There is probably a great need for this service, if you are willing to put up with some different problems than you would in a normal salon. I worked 11 years as an Activity Director in Senior Living Communities and I was always responsible for the beauty shop. The best thing for you to do is get your name out to Activity Directors and Administrators of any and all facilities you would like to work with. If they do not have a need for someone now, they may in the future. It would be very rewarding for you, I am sure. Everyone loves going to the beauty shop — it is such a special time for the residents, and they always feel so special afterward All it takes is a lot of love, listening, and laughing. I loved my years working with Senior Adults!!
