Q&A: Question about beginning a job in graphic design?

Question by Moey: Question about beginning a job in graphic design?
I’m currently 17 and I’m still in highschool. I know a lot about CSS and HTML, I practically live on the computer and have been playing around with coding and designing as a hobby for years now. I grew up using freewebs and other free hosting sites, and I am also pretty much 100% photoshop literate.
I see job openings all the time where I’m from, saying that they are seeking inexperienced junior level developers to assist with client projects. They say that the requirements are just some HTML/CSS skills, and an overall idea of how to create and modify graphics and images in PhotoShop. I have always wanted to consider these types of jobs, but I’m always worried about that they will expect of me? I don’t know much about scripts, and I have only really created fun blogging type websites for me and my friend’s personal use, so what will I be asked to do in these kind of jobs? What will they expect of me?
Also when it comes to designing a portfolio, or showing examples, does anyone know of some websites proving tips and such? Thanks !

Designers don’t need to worry about PHP scripts, they typically make PSD mockups. Developers translate them to PHP scripts and such.

Q&A: how do i go about getting a grant to establish an assisted living facility?

It is hard to find grants to start a business. Unlike the myths that some perpetuate, federal government and even private foundations hardly give grant money for starting a for-profit business.

One possible exception is for companies developing or exporting agricultural goods, including food and forest product. Another exception could be the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) or Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs http://www.sba.gov/aboutsba/sbaprograms/sbir/index.html , which fund the research and development of technological innovation that meets specific government needs.

Your best bet actually will be from the states if they offer grant programs for women (or any other special interest groups — minorities, women, disabled, veterans, etc). Or check with non profit organizations, particularly women organizations if they offer grants. Examples include

Iowa Women’s Foundation http://www.iawf.org/
New Mexico Women’s Foundation http://www.nmwf.org/guidelines.html

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/mostrequesteditems/CON_FAQ2.html

“The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.”

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Here is a listing of federal grants for small businesses. See if there is any available for individuals for starting a business — THERE’S NONE.

http://12.46.245.173/pls/portal30/CATALOG.BROWSE_BENEF_RPT.show

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

I like living in dreamworlds, how about you?

Question by naphtli: I like living in dreamworlds, how about you?
I’ve read quite a few comments on folks who argue for citizenship for illegals based on the idea that the added taxes would save Social Security. Let’s take a step back and use a little logic. Let’s go under the assumption that every immigrant won’t bring their extended family including grandparents who, of course, must be given SSA benefits. Wait a moment – I have to stop dreaming. Thanks. The influx of new taxes will not save Social Security. At the very best, it will postpone the problem to the next generation. The added taxes may help fund SSA for the current beneficiaries and perhaps the baby boomers. Howevere, with people living longer every generation, when the illegals reach SSA age along with everyone else, we’ll have the same problem, just on a bigger scale. The only way to save SSA the way it is built is for people to die sooner. No offense, but it was structured back when there was 1 senior for every 7-8 workers, not 1 for every 2-3.

Advice about senior prom for a clueless tomboy living under a rock? Please and Thank you!?

Question by : Advice about senior prom for a clueless tomboy living under a rock? Please and Thank you!?
Senior prom is coming up. I don’t know what to wear and get there. Advice please?

I’m a girl that acts like a tomboy all the time. [I'm very sporty/spend a lot of time playing sports.] Hence, I keep my hair really short.
I am going to prom, but I don’t want to spend that much on it. I don’t have a date, and I doubt that I will get one [I'm bisexual]. So here are my questions:

1) Should I get a tux or dress?
I don’t particularly feel comfortable in dresses, but worst case scenario I have a short back up dress to wear. I don’t like showing my legs, so I want to get a long one if I can’t get a tux.
The only problem that I have with a tux is that will I look too much like a waitress? I found a site where I can get the tux for about 0, and our prom is going to be taking place at a classy hotel.
Since I rarely wear dresses, I don’t want to spend more than on it. I’m willing to spend a bit more for the tux since I do wear suits occasionally. Or will a suit be a better option? [If you can send me links for nice reasonably priced suits, that will be awesome.]

2) Will it be weird if I drive myself to prom?
Some of my friends are getting a limo, and I have the choice to go with them, even though it will be kinda expensive. So I’m sorta asking is going in a limo worth it/will I get a chance to go somewhere in a limo again?

And I guess one more piece of info, I’m not superstitious or anything, but 2011 has been a bad year for me, and I kinda don’t even know if its gonna be fun, so I don’t want to waste money on something stupid.
I know the whole, prom is what you make it, and I do believe that, it’s just I don’t particularly feel like it’s going to be as great as it’s supposed to be [ei, there's too much hype about it, and it seems to be fake after awhile]. But, the point really is to enjoy the night with friends, which is definitely my goal; I just don’t want to stick out for my lack of “classiness” for lack of a better word.

Does anyone know about home health care for seniors?

Question by kate t: Does anyone know about home health care for seniors?
My 80 yr old mother will shortly be undergoing surgery for which I believe she may need some in-home care afterwards. She has two kinds of insurance (Medicare and a supplement), with no assets to speak of. Does anyone know how I go about finding out what she might be entitled to vis-a-vis in-home care? I’ve read a bit online, but between long-term care, short-term care, home-health care, custodial care, palliative care, Medicare parts A,B,C, and D, and blah, blah, blah….you get the picture. And what if she needs care on a more regular basis, depending on how this all turns out? Overall, I feel like I’m in a bit over my head. Any guidance out there? And thanks for your answers.

Q&A: How do you feel about putting elderly into assisted living homes?

Question by Psychedelic Worm: How do you feel about putting elderly into assisted living homes?
many societies/cultures always take care of their elderly and rely on the community and family to help them when they can’t themselves. We tend to put our elderly into old age homes when they can’t do anything anymore. How do you feel about this?

Very quick and easy question about my taxes?

Question by Gohan Reborn: Very quick and easy question about my taxes?
I was going to do it thru Turbotax online back in february, decided not to, and go to someone else, and for personal reasons am now…late, but still am going to do it online.

Anyways, one of the questions is did I financially support a relative. I’m not sure if I should put yes or no.

I live with my father (in 2008 he turned 64, and I was 20), and from the moment I got my job (February 2008), I’ve been giving him 0 a month to assist in paying bills, beyond my share of the rent. (my share of the rent would be 5 a month). Is this considered financially assisting him, or would it be considered paying MY bills, because I live there, even though I give more than half?
Lol, no this is not his house. We are essentially roomates, however I pay more than half of the shared utilities and rent. Thanks guys.

It will depend on if on his tax return he indicated that he was a dependent on anothers tax return. And if you were giving him 520 amonth, did he claim that income? You also want to be sure he did not claim you.

How do I go about becoming a court appointted guardian for elderly in nursing homes?

Question by mystical_dreamer_04: How do I go about becoming a court appointted guardian for elderly in nursing homes?

Best answer:

Answer by johnjanetl
Typically the person has to have a need for a guardian. At that point you file with the court, they contact any interested parties to allow them to dispute guardianship if they so wish, then if no one objects and you meet the requirements of guardianship, it will be granted. Typically as guardian you also have to report to the court financial statements if the person is recieving any monies or benefits every six months…you have to keep records of bills and what was paid etc from those funds.
