Do Elders need Health Check-ups?

Do Elders need Health Check-ups?

Most of us who have parents in “senior citizen” age category wouldn’t be strangers to active parsimony our parents and elders demonstrate when it comes to spending on their own health. You might have noticed them going through the pain and discomfort in the early stages of illness, hoping that things will be cured on their own (and many times they do). Only when the suffering becomes unbearable (and perhaps more for you then for them), do they relent to your requests to show themselves to a doctor. Otherwise, it is mostly up to home or self remedies.

Two incidents come to my mind. Few days ago, I met an eminent pathologist who is running a diagnostic center in Mumbai. He told me how he was invited to do blood scans of senior citizens in a high-end housing complex. He scanned 72 people for PSA and found four people positive, indicating that they could be in early stages of prostrate cancer!! Based on this, they went for advanced screening. It turned out to be a false alarm in some cases, but not so in all. Some elders were indeed suffering from prostrate cancer. There was a silver lining. It was detected in early stages when all was not lost for them. The protagonist of the other incident that comes to my mind was not so fortunate. She was an old lady who started to get bouts of fever. It took a while before she let her condition be known to even her immediate family members. Even when the fact that she was getting fever was known, she tried her utmost to play down the severity of her ailment. Treatment was primarily analgesics and home remedies for quite some time. Finally, when things did not improve, the family forced her to a doctor. It was found that she was suffering from fairly advanced stage of a viral urinary infection, and that it had spread to other organ systems as well. The stage was too late for doctors to do anything.

These incidents only bring forth the fact that elderly are just like children when it comes to medicine. While looking at the latter, the doctors have to deal with the fact that the power of expression of their patients is not yet developed, so they will never be able to describe their symptoms accurately. In case of elders, it will be reluctance to talk about their own suffering that will cause a similar situation. It is therefore not a bad idea at all to have your little children, and your old parents undergo periodic routine medical examination to detect any ailments brewing up and nip them in the bud. Good news is that prominent medical institutions do cater for senior citizen health-check ups.

Some of these are available on Eldess, the platform for taking care of your Elders.

Eldess offers comprehensive healthcare package for elders. It serves as a platform that takes care of elderly members by providing them various health care and other support services. More information visit here: http://www.eldess.com

Iowa health center receives $2 million in stimulus funding

Iowa health center receives million in stimulus funding

An Iowa health care provider is one of 85 community health centers nationwide to receive a significant monetary boost from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, President Barack Obama announced Wednesday.

“… Funding for construction, technology and a medical home demonstration project won’t just save more money, and create more jobs, they’ll give more people the peace of mind of knowing that health care will be there for them and their families when they need it. Ultimately, that’s what health reform is really all about,” Obama said.

Primary Health Care Inc. of Des Moines is slated to receive more than .6 million. The nonprofit organization maintains dental and medical clinics in Des Moines as well as a community access pharmacy, HIV services and outreach project. It also operates a medical and dental clinic in Marshalltown.

Although the clinics provide services to patients who have insurance, they specifically cater to those who are uninsured or underinsured. According to their Web site, Primary Health Care Inc. strives “to find and successfully treat medical condition before they become serious enough to require hospitalization or emergency treatment.”

It has also developed several specialized programs.

The Outreach Program specifically targets populations that often fall through the cracks in existing health care.

Health Care for the Homeless is a federally funded program that serves individual, families, street youth and homeless children in a non-traditional clinic setting. A federally-funded program called Enhancement provides mental health and substance abuse care for homeless clients.

The organization has also developed a four-point program for maternal child health that consists of a combination of state and federally-funded programs to provide service to pregnant women, newly expanding families and newborns up to age 6. Their Families in Transition program, which is funded through U.S. Housing and Urban Development, serves both prenatal or parenting families up to a child’s 15th birthday, and allows case workers to link homeless individuals to medical and mental health services as well as affordable and safe living environments.

Clinics that participate in the Outreach Program are located in six different sites throughout Des Moines, placing them within the areas of the community that are experiencing the most need.

To qualify for funding, the health facility had to be a federally-qualified community health center. Grants of 8.5 million were provided through the Facility Investment Program to address pressing health center facility needs. Also, as much as million was made available to help Health Center Controlled Networks improve operational effectiveness and clinical quality in health centers by providing management, financial, technology and clinical support services.

The new Recovery Act funds are the latest in a series of grants awarded to community health centers, which deliver preventive and primary care services nationally at more than 7,500 service delivery sites around the country to patients regardless of their ability to pay.  Across the country health centers serve more than 17 million patients, about 40 percent of whom have no health insurance.

Q&A: Salary Comparables for an Admin Assistant?

Question by blondewithheart: Salary Comparables for an Admin Assistant?
I’ve worked as an admin/personal assist on and off for the past 6 years in a real estate company in south texas. My boss has asked me to come on full time, for her inability to find anyone to fill a spot I don’t really want to take (I like more time with my son and work only 3 days a week). I was wondering if this seems a fair offer for someone who has no degree, 2 yrs of unrelated college courses. Keep in mind I am from deep south texas, I am NOT bilingual, which is usually a requirement for jobs here (it is nearly impossible to be hired if you don’t speak spanish) and the pay rate here is lower than other big cities where the rate of living is higher (you can get a gorgeous 900 sq ft two bdrm apartment for less than 0 a month). SO here is the offer:

-9-5 with one hour for lunch.
-No weekend work.
-A part time assistant will be assigned to me, and because of that my boss “won’t fuss” if I need to take an afternoon here or there off.
-Paid Holidays, including 1.5weeks for Christmas and 5 days for thanksgiving.
-She will pay for 1/2 the cost for me to obtain my realtor’s license so I can assist her better, increasing my pay and more flexible hours.
-,000 per/yr

This is a small company, I doubt she’d be willing to pay more and the afternoons here and there off while maintaining a full time job seem to make up for the pay. What do you think?
I have a night job as well, which I would give up if I took on this position- so iether way I’ll have the same amount of time with my son since I’ll have my evenings with him back….

I think you should do what’s best for your family. if you don’t need the money and don’t have to work, I would much rather spend time with my son!.

That aside, you have worked for her for the past 6 years and she’s offering your .65 an hour? I think that’s a bit low…even for south Texas. I think more like .00 an hour, especially considering she can’t get anyone else to take the job.

And now, most importantly, I worked for a real estate agency in Tyler for 5 years and, from experience, I guarantee you that if you get your real estate license, you will be doing all the work of the real estate agent and she will be getting all the commissions, you will be making the admin assistant’s salary. That’s why she wants you to get your license…she’s not even offering to pay for it in full!! HA!

If you don’t need to work, I would decide what hours I can work and tell her “This is how much I can work”. Sounds like she needs you, not the other way around. Your experience IS valuable.

Health Savings Accounts

Health Savings Accounts

As the owner of an independent health insurance agency and the founder of a website for comparing health insurance providers I often get asked, “What type of health insurance do YOU have?” Of course, no one health insurance company or health insurance plan is right for everyone because everyone has different needs, lives in a different area, etc… but I can certainly feel comfortable telling people that I personally have a Health Savings Account (HSA) and I absolutely love it!
Here are 7 reasons why I love my HSA:
#1 All Contributions to my HSA are Tax Deductible

Every single dollar that I contribute into my HSA http://www.easytoinsureme.com/united-health-one.html every year is deductible on the front of my personal 1040 tax return (up to certain annual limits imposed by the IRS – for 2010 the maximum deductible HSA contribution is ,050 for singles and ,150 for families with those age 55 or over getting an extra ,000 allotted maximum contribution amount).  This HSA contribution deduction is great because it is an “above the line” deduction meaning that it is deducted before arriving at your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) number.  To make this deduction even better there are absolutely no income phaseouts for the HSA contribution deduction so you could be Bill Gates or Warren Buffet and still take the full HSA contribution deduction.  The more money you make the more attractive this deduction is to you.
#2 The Money in my HSA Grows Tax Free

All of the money in my Health Savings Account grows tax free as long as I use the money in the account for qualified medical expenses or wait until I am age 65 or older and use it for my retirement.  Yes, you heard me right “Tax Free” not just “Tax Deferred” as you may be accustomed to hearing about with a 401K or other similar tax deferred account.
#3 I Can Choose any Health Insurance Company I Want

Another reason I love my HSA is that the HSA itself is simply a savings account with some special paperwork so that it receives special treatment from the IRS.  The HSA itself is NOT health insurance but is simply the second component of what is commonly thought of as a HSA health insurance plan with the first component being a high deductible health insurance plan (according to the IRS a high deductible health insurance plan is any health plan with a deductible of at least ,200 for singles and ,400 for families – so still pretty low minimums).  What this means is that many different banks offer Health Savings Accounts and you can choose the bank that you prefer to set up your HSA and then buy your high deductible health insurance plan from any insurance company that you like.  You can even purchase a plan from United Healthcare one year and then shop around in year two and switch to a potentially cheaper plan with Humana and then in year three switch to Blue Cross Blue Shield, etc.  This ability to constantly comparison shop and not be tied to one particular insurance provider is a great benefit to an HSA (as your actual savings account component of the plan still stays with your original bank).
#4 I Pay Very Low Monthly Premiums

The higher the deductible is on your health insurance plan then the lower your monthly premium payments will be.  Since a high deductible health insurance plan is a requirement for opening a Health Savings Account then one of the nice things about the plans is that the monthly premiums are comparatively very low!  I would much rather save a large sum of money every month by paying less in premiums each month than paying extra for a very low deductible and co-pays.
#5 I Am Firmly In Control of My Health Care Dollars

The beautiful thing about an Health Savings Account as compared to a Flexible Spending Account is that while Flex Spending Accounts require you to use up the money in the account every year all of the money that you contribute to an HSA rolls over from year to year.  In fact, as mentioned above, even if you don’t end up using the money in your HSA for medical expenses (a good thing!) then when you reach age 65 you can withdraw the money tax free for your retirement.  Most HSA custodians will give you an option to place your HSA money into a savings account, investment account, etc. as the decision is up to you as to where you place your HSA account money.
#6 I Can Rest Easy

Admittedly some people simply sleep better at night knowing that they have a very low deductible and low co-pays for things like doctor’s visits and prescriptions and I understand that but I like to think of it like this -  After your first year of contributing the maximum to your HSA then unless you use up all of the money with a large unforeseen medical bill then you will have enough money in your HSA for years two and on that even if you have to meet your deductible then as long as your HSA health insurance plan covers all expenses 100% once the deductible is met then you effectively have zero out of pocket costs because you already have the money in your HSA account!  Sure, if you start an HSA tomorrow and you have only contributed a couple hundred dollars into the account so far and you get hit with a big medical bill then you will have to come out of pocket for your deductible amount but once you have maxed out your HSA contribution for a year or two then you are essentially home free with potentially no additional out of pocket costs even for large medical bills!
#7 HSA Setup is Very Easy

If you can open a savings account then you can open a Health Savings Account just as easily.  If you can apply for a regular health insurance plan then you can apply for a high deductible health insurance plan just as easily.  Almost every bank has HSA’s available and almost every health insurance company has high deductible health insurance plans available.  Setting up an HSA is so easy that I probably took twice as long to write this article as it would take you to apply for both a Health Savings Account at your bank and a high deductible health insurance plan at your health insurance company.

Some households which can be a danger for your health

Some households which can be a danger for your health

Every body love their home, and it is the sweetest thing in the world. And we can say, it is the blessing of God that we own our own home. But it is possible that there may be some households present in your house and about which you have no idea, how dangerous they can be. Lets talk about some of most important household things which can cause threat to your safety.

1)      Kitchen Sponge

Well, I am sure you don’t know that the sponge you use in washing dishes contains more than 200 million bacteria and all those bacteria are present on the sponge at this time as well. After washing dishes, the method you use to clean sponge doesn’t kill bacteria on it. Even after cleaning, some really dangerous bacteria still exist which can make you sick.

An American institute has researched that cleaning the sponge by washing it with bleach solution or lemon juice is of no use. They specifically told that sponge must be kept in higher temperature in microwave oven or dish washer atleast for 1-minute. This process will kill 99.9% bacteria on the sponge.

2)      Your Bed

It is possible that you may have been out for holidays or at relatives for few days, and when you returned, you brought some unwanted guests (insects) stuck with your clothes or luggage and those insects would have hide themselves in dark places in your home. Modern research has shown that such insects (very small) can cause disease like hepatitis or chagas. Allergy and infection is also possible if bitten by these insects. So regularly, after some time, you must use insect killer / insecticides to keep such unwanted guests away from yourself and your children.

3)      Computer Keyboard

You may be thinking that only you use computer laptop or keyboard and how keyboard can be dirty. But University of North Carolina has published a research in which it is shown that bacteria are found at keyboard in very large numbers. There can be up to 20 thousand bacteria per inch on the keyboard and main reason for this is that we don’t clean our keyboard that often. So to avoid it, you must clean keyboard regularly.

Bacteria are found on many other places in homes like in washing machine, handle of your door, Salt and Pepper boxes. So in order to avoid diseases and stay healthy, you must take steps to make your home safer and healthier.

Sorry, but don’t believe what you’re told. If there was such a thing we’d all stay home to make money. Set our own hours and how much time we wanted to spend on it. I’d love something like this, but it does not exist!!!
